Expressing your thoughts in words is sometimes a big deal. That too in an eccentric way is more operose. Playing safe with wonted writing doesn’t always work in the long run. But a little bit of thought, not worrying about the critics and using the literary freedom to the fullest can sculpt one into a good creative writer.

Generally as writers, you are assigned with the job to make reading interesting. It’s not much of an uphill task. It’s not even about putting on much effort in the vocabulary. Just focusing on making every single sentence engrossing is enough to keep the readers’ interest alive. Treading along the same path, adding a little bit of extra seasoning of words here and there could easily venture one into creative writing.

First, second or third person… I understood that telling a buttoned-down story in unbuttoned way is the key to creative writing irrespective of whichever narrative it is. Cheeky. Isn’t it?

It’s all about ingenious play with words. Anyway, while we are discussing about wordplays, let’s think about the consequence that is triggered by them.

Humour plays a major role in creative writing

Yes. Wordplays often end up giving birth to humour. Humour plays a major role in creative writing. That enhances the quality of the material also. Certainly you don’t need any gestation period to imbue yourself with humour. All you need to do is just look around your surroundings and get inspired. Humour is scattered all around in abundance. You just need to extract it and quaff.

For example, I witnessed the other day at a restaurant when two friends surprisingly bumped into each other. I overheard their conversation which left me in splits.

Guy 1: Hey, you! What a surprise!

Guy 2: That I am still alive?

Guy 1: No. How am I alive after seeing your plain head!

Guy 2: Yeah! Yeah! I am going bald.

Guy 1: Going bald? You’re talking as if you were a Steven Tyler before. I don’t remember you ever having an inch of a hair follicle on your head.

I couldn’t help, but join their laughter galore thereafter. So my point here is.. just replacing a few formal answers with a bit playful replies lights up the ambiance. It’s a good example of breaking the norms and expressing oneself wholeheartedly. Whether speaking or writing, doing just a little bit different from the customary routine can do wonders. What if the guys had started it off with the ever so boring, “How are you?” (Probably I wouldn’t have gotten this piece to share here)

Yes. A simple normal conversation would have followed thereafter, which both the parties would have felt obligated to drag on.

By exercising tried and tested methods, we ourselves are restricting our thinking capacity, thus forcing the mind to accept no new things. We are so much into the results that we don’t want to see any impact. What’s my take here is, ignore the result. Make an impact.

If something is going well and straight, try to twist it up a bit, put on some knots, add some spice, but in the end, detangle it and bring it all in one place to finish well.

Creative writing is all about having fun with your skill. Freedom to express in whichever way you want. I believe every single person who treasures the art of writing could conquer the literary world
